The U.S. Department of State through the National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) provides merit-based scholarships for eligible American high school students to learn less commonly taught languages in summer, semester, and academic year overseas immersion programs. In 2010/11, there are seven languages: Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), Hindi, Korean, Persian (Farsi), Russian, and Turkish. For more information and to apply online, please visit nsliforyouth.org. University of South Alabama- There will be 10 $5,000 awarded to incoming freshmen pursing a degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or Inofrmation Technology. Deadline is December 1st, 2009. - Tuscaloosa County Medical Society - $1,000 for a senior in the Tuscloosa County area who has demonstrated excellence through leadership, community involvment, work experience, academic achievement, and interst in pursinf a Health related profession. - Young American Creative Patriotic Award - Students are asked to express their patriotism through their art. Eight scholarships are awarded at the national level - the top prize is $10,000. - JFK Profile in Courage Essay Contest - The John F. Kennedy Library Foundation invites U.S. high school students to write an original essay on the political courage of a U.S. elected official. - Shelton State Community College has been awarded the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Implementation Grant. The objective of this grant is to increase the number of minority students who enter STEM disciplines. STEM Fellows are required to participate in the STEM program the summer following graduation from high school. The summer program lasts six weeks, June 15, 2009, through July 24, 2009. Through this program students will earn four college credits in orientation and computer science and will participate in STEM curricular activities as preparation for their freshman year. For support, STEM Fellows will receive a stipend, laptopcomputer, and waiver of tuition and fees during this summer program.
- The Leon Bradley Scholarship Program is established to encourage more minorities or persons of color to enter the teaching profession. * Any monies not used for tuition can be applied to any other university-based expenses the student may incur. Deadline April 2010.
- Alabama Home Builders Foundation - for students who want to persue careers in the home building industry. Dealine in March 2010.
- University of Phoenix - Administered through the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Inc., 25 full-tuition scholarships will be awarded to students to seek an associate's, bachelor's or master's degree online and or on campus at the University of Phoenix. Deadline in February 2010.
- 2009-2010 National Co-Op Scholarship Program - These merit co-op scholarships will be awarded to high school seniors and transfer students who plan to participate in college cooperative education at one of our Partner Colleges and Universities listed in this booklet.

Earn more than 8 credits in a year (but no more than 10)! Your options: CREDIT RECOVERY - In accordance with guidelines released by the Alabama State Department of Education, the Tuscaloosa County School System will offer students who have received failing grades in courses that are required for graduation an opportunity to recover the lost credit through a standards-based approach that will target specific knowledge and skill deficits instead of requiring students to repeat the entire course. Students who qualify may apply to their school counselors to enroll in the TCSS Credit Recovery program. A maximum of ten (10) credits may be earned by a student in a school year (the regular academic year plus the following summer). In order to be accepted into the TCSS Credit Recovery program, students will - Have an overall average of 45 or higher in the course they seek to recover credit;
- Not have lost credit due to violation of the non-compliance policy (excessive unexcused absences);
- Have completed at least one calendar year of academic work at the 9th grade level;
- Complete an application signed by both students and parents/guardians;
- Provide their own transportation to Credit Recovery classes when attending the after-school sessions;
- Pay $100.00 course fee.
Transfer students from non-SACS accredited schools who do not pass the validation tests for any core courses are also eligible for Credit Recovery. You can earn more than just 8 credits in a school year but no more than 10. U of A Correspondance Classes - The University of Alabama Division of Academic Outreach extends its academic resources to students who need to complete high school courses. Students may select their hours of study and work at their own pace using online or written correspondence courses. Students can only earn 1 independent study credit per school year. However, online classes are not considered independent study classes. Students can take up to one year if needed to complete course requirements. Fees vary by class. Students must take two (2) half (1/2) credit classes to earn one (1) high school credit. EXAM EXEMPTION POLICY (Grades 9 - 12)- Any student in grades 9-12 may be exempt from a semester exam at the end of the term if the student has no discipline referrals that resulted in detention or suspension during the term AND A (90-100) average in the course w/ 3 or fewer absences OR B (80-89) average in the course w/2 or fewer absences OR C (70-79) average in the course w/1 or no absences Any student in grade 10 may be exempt from semester exams at the end of the second term if the student passes all five parts of the AHSGE.
